As a bit of a spontaneous trip, my boyfriend and his business partner (also one of my best friends), booked a few days trip to Bruges as a surprise for the girlfriends, and as a well-deserved break and business celebration!
We took the Eurotunnel and drove from Calais to Bruges, which took about 3 hours in total, about the same time it takes to drive to Liverpool from my house, crazy!

We stayed in the Hotel Walberg which was very high class with beautiful high ceilings and attention to detail, as well as being very close to the main square. Unfortunately though, the over-attentive staff and eerie quietness of the place led me to wonder if we were going to be murdered in the night, especially after the electricity cut out whilst I was in the bath. It was nice, really, I think travel must take it out of me(!)
Bruges is all round an extremely beautiful city, and much more than I was expecting to see, with its canals and ornate architecture, cobbled roads and medieval, somewhat gothic flourishes. Although there seemed to be a lot of tourists and ‘buzz’ around towards the weekend, during the weekdays the city felt as if it was ours as we roamed the almost empty streets, just adding to the charm.
And the chocolate... How could I forget the chocolate? I genuinely think I drove my boyfriend mad, insisting that I enter every single chocolate shop, in a determined search for the perfect strawberry crème. (I found it on the last day, phew)!
I’d recommend Bruges to anybody looking for a short, laid back break, particularly for those seeking romance. Unless you’re on a diet; If you’re avoiding chocolate, abandon the diet or forget it! ;)
Ah, I’ve brought back a piece of Bruges to share. Some Belgian chocolates for my next giveaway, keep your eyes peeled for that, and an outfit post of what I wore in Bruges!
